Jamyla has more than 10 years of audio experience as a radio reporter, producer, editor and guest host and has worked on the launch, production and distribution of more than 10 podcasts.

As an interviewer, she has posed questions to authors, activists, cave biologists, the daughter of a former president, athletes, legislators and flamingos (OK, she didn’t ask them questions but she did put a microphone in front of them.) 

She has taught podcasting at University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 2019 and has led numerous workshops on audio storytelling and media literacy.

  • Show description: “More Than Words” was a collaborative youth media group, radio project and podcast produced and reported by Frederick Douglass High School students.

  • Show description: Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast finds the most intelligent and intriguing voices to probe the “whys” and “who cares” behind the headlines. From the Atlantic to the Appalachians, we unravel local implications of national news stories, and explore the science, history, arts, and culture of Maryland.

  • “The Lines Between Us” was an award-winning, year-long multimedia exploration of inequality in the Baltimore region. Every Friday for a year WYPR's Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast broadcast personal stories and challenging conversations about race, class, and other factors that can divide our one region into separate worlds. The series won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award.

  • Hosted daily newscasts | Reported and produced on-air stories | Coordinated with NPR Training Team on revamp of station’s website.

    Received CAPBA's 2011 Outstanding News Series Award for three-part series exploring racial inequality in Somerset County (MD) government.
